Tyrrel Square: Dixon & Hart, surveyors
Material: tracing paper Date: c1865 Scale: 10 yards to 1 inch
Size: 35*35cm Condition: fair
Keywords: Bradford, Tyrrel, Bowling Green, 1860s
The plan centres on Tyrrel Square and shows frontages of the Commercial Hotel and Bowling Green Hotel. Dixon and Hart were the surveyors. The parcel of land to be purchased by the corporation seems to have belonged to Joseph Milner Atkinson who probably died in 1855. Other landowners are: Trustees of the late Mrs Ward, Mr Michael Smith and Mrs Oxtoby. A list of occupiers reminds us that this important central site was a mass of houses, shops, workshops, privies and ash-pits in the mid-nineteenth century. Among these occupiers I can identify Edward Harland (painter & decorator of 23 Tyrrel St) and Mary & William Archer (Mary Archer & Son, cabinet maker 21 Tyrrel St) in the 1861 Whites Directory and the 1863 Jones Mercantile Directory of Bradford.
